Acuros is Transpire's next generation radiotherapy dose calculation software, which is distributed by Varian Medical Systems (www.varian.com) as an integral part of the Eclipse™ treatment planning system. Through the novel application of leading edge numerical methods, Acuros provides an unprecedented combination of speed, accuracy, and precision; advancing the state-of-the-art in radiotherapy planning and improving the overall quality of care.
 
Unlike correction and model-based methods, Acuros calculates dose by directly solving the governing transport equations. Acuros accurately accounts for all relevant neutral and charged particle interactions, without the use of pre-calculated kernels or empirical corrections. Since Acuros and Monte Carlo solve the same equations through different methods (Acuros-deterministically, Monte Carlo-stochastically), the achievable accuracy of both methods are comparable.
 
Acuros combines the accuracy of Monte Carlo with the speed of approximate methods. Acuros is free of statistical noise, enabling the effects of small treatment planning perturbations to be accurately and rapidly assessed.
